Method

How We Compare Costs

  • One method for every city

Everyday costs for one person without rent, plus a 1-bedroom apartment in the city centre, from Numbeo (June–October 2026). New York measured the same way is about €5,340 a month.

  • Estimates, not quotes

Numbeo figures come from user reports. Each city guide shows the rent outside the centre too, and the source of every figure.

  • Outside the capital is cheaper

Second cities and towns usually cost less. See the cost of living comparison for the full table.

  • Health insurance is extra

Many visas require private health insurance — see healthcare in Europe.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest European capital to live in?

Of the 29 capitals we cover, Bucharest — about €1,280 a month for a single person including a central 1-bedroom (Numbeo, 2026). Riga (about €1,390), Sofia, Budapest, Athens and Vilnius follow.

What is the most expensive European capital?

London, at about €3,800 a month measured the same way, followed by Amsterdam, Dublin, Bern and Luxembourg City. New York is about €5,340.

Can I choose any city once I have a visa?

Usually yes within that country — residence permits are national. A permit from one Schengen country lets you visit the others for short stays, but not live or work there.

Which European capitals are outside the Schengen area?

Dublin, Nicosia and London. Ireland and Cyprus are in the EU but not (fully) in Schengen; the UK is outside both, so days there do not count towards the 90/180 rule.

Which cities use the euro?

21 of the 29 — Sofia since 1 January 2026. Prague, Copenhagen, Budapest, Warsaw, Bucharest, Stockholm, Bern and London have their own currencies.
