In short

US citizens can stay in Cyprus visa-free for 90 days in any 180. Cyprus is in the EU but not yet in Schengen, so a Cypriot permit gives no Schengen travel rights. The main routes are permanent residence by investment (Regulation 6(2) — €300,000 plus €50,000 a year of income), the digital nomad visa (€3,500 net a month, up to 3 years), the Category F permanent residence for people living on foreign income (slow — often several years), and a yearly visitor permit while you wait. From 2026 corporate tax is 15%, and foreign pensions can be taxed at 5% above €5,000 a year.

Why Cyprus

What Americans Love About Cyprus

Beyond the tax benefits — the real reasons Americans choose Cyprus.

English Everywhere

English is used across business, government, law and daily life — and Cypriot law is rooted in English common law.

Permanent Residence by Investment

€300,000 plus a €50,000 income gives a permanent permit for the family, with a visit only once every 2 years required.

Tax-Friendly Rules

Non-domiciled residents pay no defence contribution on dividends and interest for up to 17 years, and foreign pensions can be taxed at just 5% above €5,000 a year.

Mediterranean Lifestyle

Long summers, beaches, excellent food and a relaxed island pace.

Digital Nomad Visa

Up to 3 years for remote workers earning €3,500 net a month from employers or clients outside Cyprus.

EU Membership

EU member since 2004 with the euro since 2008 — and a path to an EU passport after 8 years.

Where to Live

Where to Live in Cyprus

From the business buzz of Limassol to quiet Paphos villages.

  • Limassol

The business and expat hub — cosmopolitan, with a marina, international schools and the largest professional community. The most expensive city.

  • Paphos

Rich in history and a favourite with retirees and families — a relaxed pace, beautiful coast and archaeological sites.

  • Nicosia (Lefkosia)

The inland capital — the most Cypriot city experience, government services and universities, with lower rents than the coast.

  • Larnaca

A family-friendly coastal city next to the main airport, with a seafront promenade and more affordable property.

  • Peyia & Coral Bay

Coastal villages near Paphos with villas, sea views and a strong community feel — popular with retirees.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Cyprus in Schengen?

Not yet. Cyprus is a full EU member and uses the euro, but as of September 2026 it is not a full Schengen member; the European Commission backed its readiness and the file was due at the EU Council in September 2026. A Cypriot residence permit does not give you Schengen travel rights beyond the normal 90 days in any 180.

What is Cyprus permanent residence by investment?

Regulation 6(2): invest at least €300,000 (excluding VAT) in new residential property, other real estate, a Cypriot company with at least 5 employees, or Cyprus investment funds, and show €50,000 a year of secure income (+€15,000 for a spouse, +€10,000 per child). The permit is permanent, covers your spouse and dependent children, and requires a visit at least once every 2 years. It is not the same as Category F.

What is the Cyprus digital nomad visa?

A residence permit for people working remotely for employers or clients outside Cyprus — not only in IT. You need €3,500 net a month (+20% for a spouse, +15% per child). It lasts a year and can be renewed for 2 more; up to 500 permits are available, and family members may not work.

What are the tax benefits of Cyprus for Americans?

Non-domiciled residents pay no defence contribution on dividends and interest for up to 17 years, foreign pensions can be taxed at 5% above €5,000 a year, and income tax is 0% up to €22,000 (2026). But the US still taxes its citizens worldwide — the US–Cyprus treaty's saving clause means you mainly rely on foreign tax credits.

Can Americans retire in Cyprus?

Yes. Most retirees apply for Category F permanent residence (income from abroad, no work) and live on a yearly visitor permit while it is processed — which often takes years. Those with €300,000 to invest and €50,000 a year of income can use the faster investment route instead.
