In short
US citizens can visit Slovakia visa-free for 90 days in any 180 but cannot work. Slovakia has no digital nomad visa. Since July 2025 the self-employment route (residence for business with a trade licence) must be applied for at a Slovak embassy, with a business plan in Slovak and annual quotas — only 8 applications a year at the embassy in Washington. Jobs use a single permit, and the EU Blue Card needs about €1,944 a month. There is no golden or retirement visa. From 15 July 2026, people with a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent born in Slovakia as a Czechoslovak citizen can get citizenship without living there. A single person in Bratislava spends about €1,810 a month including a central 1-bedroom.

Frequently asked questions
Does Slovakia have a digital nomad visa?
No. Slovak law has no remote-work permit. Freelancers used to rely on residence for business with a trade licence, but since July 2025 that permit must be applied for at a Slovak embassy, with a business plan in Slovak and yearly quotas — the embassy in Washington takes only 8 applications a year.
Is the živnosť route still easy for Americans?
Not any more. You need residence for business before you can use a trade licence, the first application goes through an embassy quota, and renewals from July 2026 require taxable income above €2,876.90. Sole traders pay 15% tax on revenue up to €100,000 and at least about €425 a month in contributions.
How much does it cost to live in Slovakia?
A single person spends about €1,810 a month in Bratislava including a central 1-bedroom, or about €1,570 with one outside the centre (Numbeo, September 2026). Košice costs about €1,430–1,620. Bratislava is about 20% cheaper than Vienna.
Can I get Slovak citizenship through my ancestors?
From 15 July 2026 you can, if a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent was a Czechoslovak citizen born in Slovakia — no residence or language test. People of Slovak descent can also get a Slovak Living Abroad certificate (€10).
Does Slovakia allow dual citizenship?
The naturalisation conditions do not require foreigners to give up their citizenship, but confirm your case with the Ministry of Interior. Slovak citizens who take another citizenship lose Slovak citizenship unless an exception applies — for example 5 years of residence in that country.
