In short
Americans can visit Valletta visa-free for 90 days in any 180 but cannot work. To live there, remote workers use Malta's Nomad Residence Permit (at least €42,000 a year gross), investors the MPRP permanent residence (about €99,000 plus property), and employees the EU Blue Card or a single permit. A central 1-bedroom in Valletta costs about €1,263 a month (€993 outside the centre) and a single person spends about €880 without rent, so about €2,140 in total; Sliema is about €2,510. Residents with a personalised tallinja card ride buses and the Valletta ferries free. Valletta itself has only about 5,200 inhabitants — most expats live in Sliema, St Julian's or Gzira.
