Latvia — Digital Nomad Visa

Latvia Digital Nomad Visa Full Guide for US Citizens

For US citizens who work remotely and want to live in Europe. Latvia offers a one-year long-stay visa that lets you live in Latvia while keeping your US job or running your US-registered business — with Schengen travel across 29 European countries.

In short

Latvia's digital nomad visa is a one-year long-stay (D) visa for people who work remotely for an employer registered in an OECD country (the US qualifies) or run their own business registered there. You need at least 6 months with your current employer, gross income of at least 2.5 times Latvia's average monthly wage, and health insurance with cover of at least €42,600. For 2026 that is €4,538 a month (2.5 × the 2025 average wage of €1,815). You can get one more one-year visa after the first, but the visa does not lead to permanent residence.

Canadians, Australians, Brits and other non-EU citizens: the same rules apply

The remote work visa is open to any non-EU citizen whose employer (or own business) is registered in an OECD country. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan and South Korea are all OECD members, so their citizens apply on the same terms as Americans. Only your home country's side is different:

Tax at homeThe US taxes its citizens wherever they live, so US filing continues. Most other countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK, tax by residence; living in Latvia for a year can change where you owe tax. Check with a tax advisor in your country before you move.

What Is It

Latvia’s Digital Nomad Visa — Overview

Latvia offers a one-year long-stay visa commonly referred to as the Digital Nomad Visa. It is a long-stay (D) visa for remote work — not a residence permit — that allows you to live in Latvia while working remotely for a US employer or operating your own US-registered business. It is valid across the Schengen Area, which means travel across most of Europe (up to 90 days in any 180 in other member states).

For US remote workers and freelancers, Latvia’s digital nomad route offers a clear, well-defined pathway — with documented income requirements, a straightforward application process, and one of Europe’s lower cost-of-living bases. Riga, the capital, has a growing remote-worker community, widespread English use, and excellent infrastructure.

“Latvia gives you a year in the EU, Schengen travel, and a base in one of Europe’s most underrated capitals — while you keep your US income and your US business.”

Eligibility

Who Qualifies

There are two routes to the Latvia Digital Nomad Visa. Both require proof of stable remote income above the minimum threshold.

Route 1

Remote Employee

US employer · OECD-based company · 6+ months employment

You work for a company based in an OECD country — a US employer qualifies. You must have been employed by the same employer for at least 6 months before applying, with documented remote work capability and monthly income at or above the threshold (2.5× Latvia's average gross wage).

Route 2

Self-Employed / Business Owner

US-registered business · Registered self-employed · Documented income

You own and operate a business registered in the US or another OECD country, or are registered there as self-employed. You must show income at or above the monthly threshold, evidenced through tax authority documents or equivalent financial records.

Income Requirement

The Income Threshold

Your monthly income must be at least 2.5 times Latvia's average gross monthly wage of the previous year. Latvia's average wage for 2025 was €1,815, so for 2026 the threshold is €4,538 gross a month — roughly €54,500 a year. (Some PMLP pages still show the 2025 figure of €4,213.) For many US remote workers and freelancers this threshold is straightforward to meet.

  • What counts as income

Gross salary from your US employer, or gross business income if self-employed. The requirement is on gross (pre-tax) income, not net. Dividends, rental income, or investment returns are generally not accepted as qualifying income for this visa type.

  • How to document it

Employees: provide your last 3–6 months of payslips, a letter from your employer confirming remote work and salary, and tax/social insurance records. Self-employed: tax authority documents showing income at the required level. For a visa application, documents in English or Latvian are accepted.

  • Annual recalculation

Latvia recalculates the threshold each year from the previous year's average wage. Always verify the exact figure with the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) or through your immigration advisor before submitting your application.

Benefits

What You Get

  • One-year long-stay visa

A legal right to live in Latvia for up to one year. If you still meet the income and employment conditions you can get one more one-year visa; after that you must wait 6 months before applying again on the same grounds. The visa is issued in your passport — it is not a residence permit card.

  • Schengen Area travel

With a Latvian long-stay visa you can travel within the 29-country Schengen Area (up to 90 days in any 180 in other member states). This includes Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and most of Central and Northern Europe.

  • Keep your US job or business

You are not required to work for a Latvian employer, register a Latvian company, or change your existing employment or business structure. Your US income stream stays intact.

  • Access to Riga’s growing nomad infrastructure

Riga offers coworking spaces, high-speed internet, English-speaking professionals and services, a lively expat and nomad community, and a cost of living significantly lower than Western Europe.

Important Limitations

What This Visa Does Not Allow

  • No local employment in Latvia

You cannot work for a Latvian employer, take up local employment, or provide services directly to Latvian clients as a freelancer. The visa is specifically for remote work for non-Latvian employers or businesses.

  • Does not lead to permanent residency

The Digital Nomad Visa is a visa, not a residence permit, so it does not count toward permanent residency or citizenship. Permanent residence needs 5 years on temporary residence permits. If your goal is long-term residency in Latvia, you would need a different permit — such as the share capital investor permit or a work permit.

How to Apply

Application Process — Step by Step

  1. Confirm you meet the income threshold

Check that you meet the 2026 threshold of €4,538 gross a month and make sure you have at least 6 months with your current employer, or documented self-employed income, at that level. Gather your payslips, employer letters, or tax documents.

  2. Arrange accommodation in Latvia

Secure a rental agreement or confirmed accommodation in Latvia before applying. Short-term rentals and furnished apartments are widely available in Riga for this purpose — check LocalVouch for landlords and letting agents other expats have personally recommended.

  3. Get qualifying health insurance

Purchase a health insurance policy valid in Latvia and the Schengen Area with at least €42,600 coverage. Several international insurers offer nomad-specific policies that meet this requirement.

  4. Compile your documents

Gather all required documents. Documents in English or Latvian are accepted for a visa application; others need a certified translation. Your immigration advisor can confirm which documents need translation for your specific situation.

  5. Submit your application

Submit your application to a Latvian embassy or consulate, or to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) if you are legally staying in Latvia — confirm the right channel for your situation. Pay the state fee at the time of submission.

  6. Receive your visa

Upon approval, the long-stay visa is placed in your passport. You can then enter Latvia, register your address, and begin your stay.

Why Choose Latvia

Why US Remote Workers Consider Latvia

  • Straightforward application with clear income documentation

Latvia’s requirements are clearly defined — there is no subjective business plan review, no interview, and a published income formula. If you meet the conditions and have the documents, the process is predictable.

  • Lower cost of living than most Western European nomad visa destinations

Riga’s cost of living is significantly below Lisbon, Barcelona, Amsterdam, or Berlin — all popular digital nomad destinations.

  • Riga is a growing hub for remote workers

The Latvian capital has invested in coworking infrastructure, fast broadband, and English-language services. A growing international community of remote workers and entrepreneurs calls Riga home, making integration relatively straightforward for American nomads.

  • Schengen travel without a separate visa

Your Latvian long-stay visa lets you travel across the Schengen Area without applying for separate visas. For US citizens who want to explore multiple European countries while basing in one place, this is a significant practical advantage.

Bottom Line — Is the Latvia Digital Nomad Visa Right for You?

  • You work remotely for a US employer or run your own US business

  • You want up to two years in the EU with Schengen travel
  • You want a lower cost base than Western Europe
  • You are not looking for a path to permanent residency (for that, consider the Latvia share capital investor permit)
