In short
Estonia's digital nomad visa is a long-stay (D) visa for up to 365 days for people who work remotely for an employer, their own company or clients registered outside Estonia. You need gross income of at least €4,500 in each of the 6 months before applying. The fee is €120 and the decision takes up to 30 days. Americans apply through a VFS Global centre in the US or at a Police and Border Guard Board office during a visa-free stay in Estonia. The visa does not lead to a residence permit, and after 183 days you become an Estonian tax resident.

Canadians, Australians, Brits and other non-EU citizens: the same rules apply
The digital nomad visa is open to all non-EU citizens on the same terms, so Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders and Brits apply exactly as described here. Only your home country's side is different:
- Canada
- Australia
- New Zealand
- United Kingdom
- Japan
- South Korea
- + other visa-free countries
| Where to apply | Each country has its own Estonian mission or VFS Global centre; anyone legally in Estonia can also apply at a Police and Border Guard Board office. |

| Tax at home | The US taxes its citizens wherever they live, so US filing continues. Most other countries tax by residence; a year in Estonia can change where you owe tax. Check with a tax advisor before you move. |
| Tax treaty with Estonia | Estonia has income tax treaties with the US and many other countries — check how yours treats your income. |
| Documents from abroad | Need an apostille; the US, Canada (since 11 Jan 2024), the UK, Australia and NZ issue them.Source: HCCH: Apostille Convention status table |
What Is It
Estonia's Digital Nomad Visa — Overview
Estonia introduced its digital nomad visa on 1 August 2020 — one of the first in the world, alongside Barbados and Georgia. It is a long-stay (D) visa, not a residence permit, that lets you live in Estonia for up to a year while you keep working remotely for an employer, your own company or clients registered outside Estonia.
For US remote workers, Estonia combines a clearly documented application with a digital-first government, wide use of English and Tallinn's tech scene.
For US remote workers who want a tech-forward base with clear rules and Schengen travel, Estonia remains one of the best-documented nomad visas in Europe.
Eligibility
Who Qualifies
The visa covers remote workers who can do their job from anywhere using telecommunications and who meet the income threshold for the 6 months before applying.
Remote Employee
Employer registered abroad · Location-independent work
You have an active employment contract with a company registered outside Estonia and can do your job remotely.
Business Owner or Freelancer
Own company abroad · Clients mostly abroad
You run your own company registered outside Estonia, or you freelance mainly for clients outside Estonia. In both cases you must meet the €4,500 a month income threshold.
Income Requirement
The €4,500 Income Threshold
Your gross income must be at least €4,500 a month in each of the six months before you apply — about €54,000 a year. The threshold is set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; check it before you apply.
What counts as income
The authorities look at all legal income — salary, business income, dividends, director fees, rental income and investment returns — but the main purpose of your stay must be remote work.
How to document it
Employees: payslips for the last 6 months and an employer letter confirming remote work and salary. Business owners and freelancers: bank statements, contracts and tax records for the same period.
Separate from the funds rule
The Ministry also lists funds for your stay (€132 a day for nomads). That is a different check from the €4,500 income threshold.
Benefits
What You Get
A long-stay visa for up to 365 days
The right to live in Estonia for up to a year. A further visa is possible, but long-stay visas are capped at 548 days in any 730.
Schengen travel
With an Estonian D visa you can also visit other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180.
Keep your US job, business or clients
You don't need an Estonian employer or company. Your foreign income stays in place.
Tallinn's tech ecosystem
Coworking spaces, fast internet, wide use of English and a large startup community.
Important Limitations
What This Visa Does Not Allow
Remote work must be the main purpose
You may also work for an Estonian employer, but the remote work in your application must remain the main purpose of your stay.
No path to a residence permit
Time on the visa does not count towards long-term residence or citizenship. To settle, you need a residence permit — for example for employment or a startup.
Estonian tax after 183 days
If you stay more than 183 days in 12 months you become an Estonian tax resident and must declare your income in Estonia.

How to Apply
Application Process — Step by Step
In the US you apply in person at a VFS Global centre (Washington DC, New York, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco or Los Angeles); the Embassy in Washington is the only Estonian consular post in the US. If you are already legally in Estonia, you can apply at a Police and Border Guard Board office.
Check the income threshold
Make sure you had at least €4,500 gross income in each of the last 6 months, and gather payslips, contracts or bank statements.
Arrange accommodation
Line up where you will stay in Estonia — LocalVouch can help you find landlords and relocation services other expats recommend.
Get health insurance
Buy travel medical insurance that covers treatment costs in Estonia and the Schengen Area for the whole visa period.
Prepare your documents
Documents in a language other than Estonian or English may need a certified translation.
Submit and pay the fee
Apply at VFS Global or, if you are in Estonia, at a Police and Border Guard Board office. Pay the €120 fee. The decision takes up to 30 days.
Arrive and register
With the visa in your passport, travel to Estonia and start your stay of up to 365 days.
Why Choose Estonia
Why US Remote Workers Choose Estonia
A well-established nomad visa
Running since 2020, with published requirements and a clear income test — no business plan review.
Digital and English-friendly
All state services are online, and English is widely spoken in Tallinn's professional community.
Tallinn's startup scene
Estonia has produced 10 unicorns — 1st in the EU per capita — and Tallinn is full of founders and remote workers.
Separate from e-Residency
e-Residency lets you run an Estonian company online but gives no right to live in Estonia. The nomad visa is for living here while working for employers or clients abroad.
