In short
Americans can visit Madrid visa-free for 90 days in any 180. To live there you need a Spanish residence permit — most often the digital nomad visa (€34,188 a year, which can be requested inside Spain) or the non-lucrative visa (€2,400 a month, from a US consulate). A central 1-bedroom costs about €1,332 a month and €1,066 outside the centre; a single person spends about €820 without rent, so about €2,150 in total (Numbeo, October 2026). Asking rents average €23.4 per m², from €28.5 in Salamanca to about €19 in Vallecas. The Zone A transport pass costs €32.70 in 2026, €10 under 26 and nothing from 65. Metro line 8 reaches Barajas airport in about 15 minutes; Iberia flies nonstop to eight US cities. Madrid sits at 667 m: hot summers, cold winters.
