Move to Slovenia from the United States

Alpine lakes, a short Adriatic coast and a green, compact capital. Slovenia opened a digital nomad permit in November 2025 — but it lasts one year only, so most long-term moves run through a job, the Blue Card or Slovenian roots.

In short

US citizens can visit Slovenia visa-free for 90 days in any 180 and can apply for a residence permit at an administrative unit in Slovenia during that stay, or at a Slovenian embassy. Since 21 November 2025 remote workers can get a digital nomad permit with income of about €3,140–3,200 a month — for up to 1 year, not renewable, and with no tax exemption. Employees use a single permit or the EU Blue Card (about the average gross salary). Non-EU citizens can register as self-employed only after a year of residence, and a company sponsors its owner only once it is operating. There is no golden or retirement visa. Permanent residence follows after 5 years with A2 Slovene; citizenship after 10 years usually means giving up US citizenship — unless you have Slovenian roots. A single person in Ljubljana spends about €1,850 a month including a central 1-bedroom.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Slovenia have a digital nomad visa?

Yes — a digital nomad residence permit since 21 November 2025. You need income of at least twice the average net salary (about €3,140–3,200 a month) from remote work for a foreign employer or your own business abroad. It lasts up to 1 year, cannot be extended, and a new one is possible only 6 months later. There is no tax exemption.

Can Americans retire in Slovenia?

Not on a dedicated permit — Slovenia has no retirement or passive-income visa. Retirees usually need family ties or Slovenian roots.

How much does it cost to live in Slovenia?

A single person spends about €1,850 a month in Ljubljana including a central 1-bedroom, or about €1,660 with one outside the centre (Numbeo, October 2026). Maribor costs about €1,335.

How far is Ljubljana from Venice, Vienna and Zagreb?

Zagreb is about 1 h 45 by car, Venice about 2.5 hours and Vienna about 4 hours by car (5.5–6 by train). Lake Bled is about 45 minutes away and Trieste just over an hour.

Does Slovenia allow dual citizenship?

For regular naturalisation you must give up your previous citizenship, so Americans normally lose US citizenship. Emigrants and descendants up to the 4th generation can naturalise after 1 year of residence and keep it.
