Your US Driver's License in Europe

A US license works fine on vacation — but once you live in Europe, the clock starts. In some countries you swap it in a morning; in others you start from scratch with lessons and tests. Here is where you stand in each of our 29 countries.

In short

Once you become resident in Europe, your US driver's license is only valid for a limited time — usually 6 or 12 months (185 days in the Netherlands and Belgium, 2 years in Finland). What happens next depends on the country. Twelve countries exchange a license from any US state without a driving test, including Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Greece and Croatia. France and Germany decide by US state: 18 states qualify in France, and in Germany 28 need no test and 11 only the theory test. Spain, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, the UK, Sweden and several others have no exchange — you take the theory and practical tests. Deadlines matter: in France, Luxembourg and Finland you lose the free exchange if you apply late. An International Driving Permit ($20 from AAA) is a translation to carry with your license, not a replacement.

Before You Go

International Driving Permit and Practical Tips

  • Get an International Driving Permit

Issued in the US only by AAA and AATA (about $20), valid 1 year and only together with your US license — it is a translation, not a license; it can be ordered by mail from abroad. Several countries (Austria, Czechia, Italy, Poland, Romania, Hungary) expect one or an official translation while you drive on a US license.

  • Mind the deadline

In France, Luxembourg and Finland the free exchange is lost if you apply late; in Spain, the Netherlands and the UK your license simply stops being valid, so book lessons and tests early.

  • Bring paperwork from your state

Greece, Portugal and Slovakia ask for a letter, driving record or certificate from your state DMV — order it before you move.

  • You hand in your US license

When you exchange, you normally hand in your US license, and some countries send it back to your state. Ask your state about a replacement before you exchange if you will still drive in the US.

  • Insurance

European insurers often do not recognise US driving history, so bring a claims-history letter from your US insurer to avoid new-driver prices.

What we do — and what we don't

This page explains the official rules; licensing offices make the final decision, and rules can differ between regions. We don't issue licenses or guarantee an exchange. When your move needs it, we bring in local specialists who know the process.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive in Europe with my US driver's license?

As a visitor, yes (often with an International Driving Permit). Once you become resident, it is only valid for a limited time — usually 6 or 12 months — and then you need a local license.

Which European countries exchange a US license without a test?

Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Luxembourg, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland exchange licenses from any US state, usually with only a medical or eye test. France and Germany exchange licenses from listed states.

Can I exchange my US license in Spain or Italy?

No. Neither has an exchange agreement with the US, so you must pass the theory and practical tests — within 6 months in Spain and 1 year in Italy.

Is an International Driving Permit a license?

No. It is a translation valid for 1 year that you carry with your US license. In the US it is issued only by AAA and AATA.

Does my US state matter?

Only in France and Germany. Elsewhere, every US state is treated the same.
