In short
Stockholm is the cheaper of the two: a single person with a central 1-bedroom spends about €2,600 a month, against about €2,980 in Copenhagen. Sweden's work-permit salary floor (SEK 34,470 a month, about €3,050) is far below Denmark's Pay Limit Scheme (DKK 552,000 a year, about €74,000), and Sweden offers the EU Blue Card, which Denmark does not. Copenhagen is quicker to settle into: Americans can apply from inside Denmark, permits normally take about a month, and healthcare is free once you are registered. Neither country has a digital nomad visa.
The verdict
Which City Fits You?
Both are safe, well-run, English-friendly capitals. The choice usually comes down to your visa route, your budget and how fast you need to move.
Choose Stockholm if…
- You want the lower bill — about €380 a month less for a single person with a central 1-bedroom.
- Your job pays less than Denmark's Pay Limit (DKK 552,000 a year) — Sweden's work-permit floor is SEK 34,470 a month.
- You qualify for an EU Blue Card, which Denmark does not issue.
- You want permanent residence sooner — after 4 years on work permits, against 8 (or 4 with all extra conditions) in Denmark.
- You work in tech — Skype, Spotify, Klarna, King and Mojang all started in Stockholm.
Choose Copenhagen if…
- You want to apply from inside the country and start soon — permits normally take about a month.
- You want free public healthcare from the day you register your address.
- You want to cycle everywhere — 401 km of cycle tracks, 43% of commutes by bike.
- You fly home often — nonstop flights to several US cities and a 15-minute metro to the airport.
- You will own or direct a company — Denmark has no residence rule for directors.
Cost of Living
Stockholm Is About €380 a Month Cheaper

First-hand rentals go through the city's housing queue — the average wait was 9 years in 2025, 12.4 years for Stockholm city and 21 for the inner city. Most newcomers sublet — typical asking rents are about SEK 12,000 a month for a studio and SEK 15,000 for a 2-room apartment, so budget above the average for your first year.

FAQ
Stockholm or Copenhagen? Your questions
Is Stockholm or Copenhagen cheaper?
Stockholm. A single person with a central 1-bedroom spends about €2,600 a month in Stockholm and about €2,980 in Copenhagen (Numbeo, autumn 2026). The gap is mostly rent: about €1,480 against €1,750 for a central 1-bedroom. In Stockholm, though, most newcomers have to sublet because of the long rental queue.
Which country is easier for a US work permit?
Sweden has the lower salary bar — SEK 34,470 a month (about €3,050) from June 2026 — and offers the EU Blue Card. Denmark's main route, the Pay Limit Scheme, needs DKK 552,000 a year (about €74,000), unless your job is on the Positive Lists. Denmark is faster: Americans can apply from inside the country, and permits normally take about a month.
Can I move to Stockholm or Copenhagen without a job?
Not as a remote worker — neither Sweden nor Denmark has a digital nomad visa. The routes are a job offer, your own business (Sweden's self-employment permit or Start-up Denmark), research or study. Sweden also gives holders of a master's degree up to 9 months to look for work, applied for from outside Sweden.
Where are taxes lower, Sweden or Denmark?
Both are high. Sweden's municipal tax averages 32.38% plus 20% state tax on higher incomes; Denmark's top marginal rate is about 60.5% from 2026. Both have expat schemes: in Sweden 25% of pay is tax-free for up to 7 years for experts earning over SEK 88,800 a month, and in Denmark qualifying salaries are taxed at 32.84% for up to 7 years. As a US citizen you still file US taxes.
How long until I can get citizenship?
In Sweden, 8 years of residence since the June 2026 reform, with an income requirement and a civics test. In Denmark, 9 years including 2 with permanent residence, plus Danish-language and citizenship tests. US law lets you keep US citizenship when you naturalise, and Sweden allows dual citizenship.
