Overview

Slovakia — Your Complete American Expat Guide

Slovakia has 5.41 million people, has used the euro since 2009 and borders Austria, Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. Bratislava is an hour by train from Vienna, and the US travel advisory is Level 1. The trade-offs: paperwork in Slovak, no digital nomad visa, and a self-employment route that became much harder in 2025.

We help you choose the right route, prepare your documents and settle into Slovak life.

For Americans, Slovakia is now a country for jobs, family and Slovak roots — not for quick freelancer permits. Check the 2026 citizenship-by-descent rules first.
