Living in Hungary as an American

An affordable EU base with thermal-bath culture and a historic Danube capital. Everything you need to know about building your life in Hungary.

In short

US citizens can stay in Hungary visa-free for 90 days in any 180 and can file most residence permits inside the country through the Enter Hungary portal. Remote workers use the White Card (€3,000 net a month; up to 2 years; no family); employees use the Hungarian Card, the EU Blue Card or an employment permit; investors use the guest investor permit, whose future is uncertain. Most work and investor permits lead to a national residence card after 3 years, with a Hungarian cultural knowledge exam. Income tax is a flat 15%, and there is no US tax treaty. State healthcare comes with Hungarian work; others use private insurance. A single person spends about €1,300–1,500 a month in Budapest including rent.

Overview

Hungary — Central Europe's Value Option for Americans

Hungary combines moderate costs, thermal baths, café culture and a historic capital on the Danube with full EU and Schengen membership. Since the 2024 immigration law, Americans can file most permits without leaving the country.

We help you choose the right permit, prepare your documents and settle into Hungarian life.

Hungary's permits are clearly defined — but they differ a lot in what they lead to. The White Card is quick, yet it never leads to permanent residence. Pick the route that matches your long-term plan.

Navigating Hungarian Visas & Residency

US citizens can stay visa-free for 90 days in any 180. Under Act XC of 2023 (in force since 2024), visa-free nationals can file most permits inside Hungary through the Enter Hungary portal or at a regional office; you can also apply at a Hungarian consulate in the US.

Remote Workers

White Card

€3,000 net a month for the 6 months before entry, from a foreign employer or your own business abroad. 1 year, extendable once. No family members, no work for Hungarian clients, and no path to permanent residence.

Employees

Hungarian Card, Blue Card & Employment Permit

Qualified employees and managers can use the Hungarian Card (up to 3 years, extendable) or the EU Blue Card (about HUF 1 million a month in 2026). Other jobs use an employment permit, usually with a labour-market check.

Self-Employed

Guest Self-Employment Permit

Income above 24 times the minimum wage (HUF 7.75 million a year in 2026) or company-manager tests. Up to 3 years in total; no family in year 1; no route to permanent residence. Company formation guide.

Long-term

Permanent Residence

The national residence card after 3 years of uninterrupted stay (not for White Card, self-employment or student permits) and EU long-term residence after 5 — both with a written Hungarian cultural knowledge exam.

Cost of Living

Hungary Cost of Living for Americans

Hungary is one of the more affordable EU countries, though Budapest rents have risen fast.

Housing and everyday costs

A 1-bedroom costs about €730 in central Budapest and €565 outside the centre. A single person spends about €745 a month without rent, so about €1,300–1,500 in total. Debrecen, Pécs, Győr and Szeged come to about €1,100–1,250 (Numbeo, 2026 estimates).

Healthcare

State healthcare (the TAJ card) comes with Hungarian employment or contributions. White Card holders and other newcomers without Hungarian work need private insurance, or a state agreement that costs HUF 161,400 a month in 2026. A cheaper monthly contribution (HUF 12,300) is only open to people with permanent status and at least a year at a registered address.

Tax

Income tax is a flat 15%. Employees pay 18.5% social security; sole traders also pay 13% social contribution tax on at least the minimum wage. The US ended its tax treaty with Hungary from 2024, so Americans rely on the US foreign tax credit or the foreign earned income exclusion.

Expat Tips

Essential Tips for Americans Moving to Hungary

  • Choose your permit for the long term

The White Card is capped at 2 years and never leads to permanent residence; the self-employment permit is capped at 3. If you want to stay, plan a route that counts.

  • Register your address

You register your own address at a government office with the owner's consent, and report moves within 3 working days.

  • Budget in forints

Prices and salaries are in forints and the exchange rate moves.

  • Plan your US taxes

With no treaty since 2024, check how your pension, dividends and other income are taxed in both countries before you move.

  • Learn some Hungarian

It is a hard language, but the cultural knowledge exam for permanent residence is in Hungarian — start early.

  • Expect real seasons

Summer heatwaves reach 32–35°C, and January lows are around −3°C.
