In short
US citizens can visit Sweden visa-free for 90 days in any 180. To live and work there, most Americans get a work permit (salary at least SEK 34,470 a month from June 2026) or an EU Blue Card (SEK 53,625), applied for online with Migrationsverket before they start. Sweden has no digital nomad visa. If you stay at least a year you register with Skatteverket for a personnummer, which gives access to banking and subsidised healthcare, with visit fees capped at SEK 1,450 a year. Foreign experts earning more than SEK 88,800 a month can have 25% of their pay tax-free for 7 years. A single person in Stockholm spends about €2,600 a month including a central 1-bedroom.

Cost of Living
Sweden Cost of Living for Americans
Sweden is expensive by European standards, especially Stockholm, but cheaper than big US cities.
Housing and everyday costs
A 1-bedroom apartment costs about €1,480 in central Stockholm and €955 outside the centre. A single person spends about €1,120 a month without rent, so about €2,100–2,600 in total. Gothenburg, Malmö and Uppsala come to about €1,750–1,815 with a central apartment (Numbeo estimates, September–October 2026). Most newcomers start in a sublet — first-hand rentals in Stockholm go through a queue that takes years.
Tax
Salaries pay municipal tax — 32.38% on average in 2026 — plus 20% state tax on taxable income above SEK 643,000 a year. Foreign experts earning more than SEK 88,800 a month who were not tax resident in Sweden in the previous 5 years can have 25% of their pay exempt for up to 7 years; apply within 3 months of starting work. Capital income is taxed at 30%, and there is no wealth or inheritance tax.
Healthcare
Healthcare is run by the regions. Once you are registered in Sweden you pay subsidised fees — for example SEK 275 for a primary-care doctor in Region Stockholm — and visit fees are capped at SEK 1,450 in any 12 months, prescription medicines at SEK 3,800. If you stay less than a year, you need your own comprehensive health insurance for the permit.

Check the salary before you sign
Your offer must reach SEK 34,470 a month (unless an exemption applies) and match the collective agreement for the job.
Register for your personnummer
If you will stay a year or more, notify Skatteverket and book the in-person ID check soon after arrival. It often takes 4 weeks or more — and you need the number for BankID, banking and healthcare.
Start the housing search early
Join Bostadsförmedlingen's queue (SEK 200 a year) the day you decide to move, and look for sublets in the meantime. Directories like LocalVouch can help you find English-speaking relocation and tax advisers.
Ask about the expert tax relief
If you earn more than SEK 88,800 a month, the 25% exemption must be applied for within 3 months of your start date.
Learn Swedish
Swedes speak excellent English, but Swedish matters for many careers and, from 2027, for citizenship. Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) is free.
