In short
e-Residency is an Estonian government digital ID that lets you found and run an Estonian company (OÜ) online and sign documents digitally. It costs €150, takes 3–8 weeks to process plus 2–5 weeks for the card to arrive, and must be collected in person — in the US only at the Embassy in Washington, D.C. It is not a visa, residence permit or tax residency and does not guarantee a bank account. Company registration costs €265, and the company needs an Estonian address and contact person, usually through a service provider. Estonian companies pay no tax on retained profit and 22% on distributions.

What Is It
Estonia e-Residency — Overview
e-Residency is a government-issued digital identity that lets non-residents found and run an Estonian company online. Estonia launched it on 1 December 2014 — the first country to do so. By September 2026 about 144,600 people from more than 170 countries held it, and they had founded over 44,000 companies.
For US citizens, it offers an EU company — an Estonian OÜ — with EU VAT registration, digital signing and online access to Estonian government services, without moving to Estonia. You collect the card once, in person.
e-Residency is not about living in Estonia — it's about running an EU company from anywhere. For US entrepreneurs, the harder questions are US tax and banking, not the application.
Critical Distinction
What e-Residency Is — and What It Is Not
A Digital Business Identity
Company formation · Digital signing · Online admin
A government digital ID for logging in and signing documents. With it you can found an Estonian OÜ online, manage it remotely and use Estonian e-services.
Not a Visa, Not Residence
No right to live · No entry rights · No tax residency
e-Residency is not citizenship, residence or a visa, and gives no right to enter or live in Estonia or the EU. It is not a travel or photo ID and does not change your personal tax residency. It also does not guarantee a bank account.
Corporate Tax System
Estonia's Distribution-Based Corporate Tax
Estonian companies pay no corporate tax on profit they keep or reinvest. Tax applies when profit is distributed — as dividends or hidden distributions — at 22% of the gross amount (22/78 of the net dividend, about 28.2%). The planned 2026 increases were cancelled, so the rate stays at 22%.
The US side changes the picture
For US owners, profit kept in an Estonian company is taxed at 0%, which is below the 18.9% high-tax threshold for the US NCTI rules (formerly GILTI). Undistributed profit can therefore be taxed in the US each year. Plan with a US international tax adviser — some single owners elect for the OÜ to be treated as a disregarded entity (Form 8832).
Where the company is managed matters
The Estonian Tax and Customs Board warns that running the company from the US can create a US permanent establishment, and that individual owners usually cannot credit the Estonian distribution tax at home.
Annual report every year
Every Estonian company must file an annual report within 6 months of year-end (30 June), whether or not it paid dividends. Missing it leads to fines and eventually deletion from the register.
What You Can Do
What e-Residency Gives You
Found an EU company online
Register an OÜ through the Business Register portal — no notary. Filing takes minutes and registration usually 1–2 working days. Minimum capital is €0.01, paid in at founding.
EU invoicing and VAT
Your company can invoice in euros, work with EU payment providers and register for EU VAT (required above €40,000 of taxable supplies in a calendar year).
Digital signing and e-services
Sign contracts, resolutions and annual reports digitally, and use Estonian e-services from anywhere.
No tax on retained profit
The company pays no Estonian corporate tax until it distributes profit.
Compliance & Limitations
Compliance Requirements & Key Limitations
Address and contact person required
The company needs an Estonian registered address. If the board manages it from abroad, it must name an Estonian contact person — usually a service provider, about €200–400 a year (e-Residency estimate).
Bookkeeping and filings
Keep proper accounts. VAT returns are monthly once registered; payroll and dividend returns (form TSD) are due by the 10th after a payment. A licensed accountant is not legally required, but most e-residents use one — from about €50 a month.
Banking is not guaranteed
e-Residency does not guarantee a bank account. LHV is the Estonian bank most used by e-residents; many use EU payment institutions such as Wise or Revolut Business, which decide case by case.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is e-Residency a visa or residence permit?
No. It is a digital ID for business. It gives no right to enter, live or work in Estonia or the EU and does not make you an Estonian tax resident.
How much does e-Residency cost?
€150 for the application. The card is valid for 5 years and renewal costs another €150. Founding a company costs €265, plus a contact-person service (about €200–400 a year) and accounting.
Where can Americans pick up the e-Residency card?
In the US, only at the Embassy of Estonia in Washington, D.C. You can also collect it in Estonia or at other locations worldwide. The card cannot be mailed.
How long does it take?
Processing takes 3–8 weeks, then 2–5 weeks for the card to reach your pick-up point. Company registration then usually takes 1–2 working days.
Does Estonia's 0% tax on retained profit help US owners?
Often less than it seems. Under the US NCTI rules (formerly GILTI), profit taxed at 0% abroad can be taxed in the US each year. Plan your structure with a US international tax adviser.
