In short

The licence costs a one-off CZK 1,000; you get a confirmation for the visa application and can trade once you hold residence. The visa needs accommodation, a clean criminal record, insurance and funds of CZK 156,500 (about €6,430), is decided within 90 days and is filed at a Czech embassy. Income tax is 15% (23% above CZK 1,762,812), or one monthly flat tax from CZK 9,162 that also covers social and health insurance. Companies (s.r.o.) pay 21% corporate tax.

Overview
Launching Your Business in Czechia
Czechia offers American freelancers and founders one of the EU's clearest routes to residence through its trade licence (živnostenský list) system, together with a lively tech scene in Prague and Brno. As a US citizen you can enter visa-free for 90 days in any 180.
To run a business and live in Czechia you apply for a long-term visa for business at a Czech embassy or consulate before you travel — you cannot switch from a visa-free stay. The process is document-heavy, but the rules are published and predictable.
The trade licence system is transparent, inexpensive and lets you work across many business activities — one of the most practical freelance frameworks in the EU.

Residency Pathways
Navigating Founder Visas & Residency
Three main routes exist for American founders, depending on how you work.
Business Visa + Trade Licence
The most common route. A trade licence lets you work as a self-employed person (OSVČ). You need the trade licence confirmation, accommodation, a clean criminal record, insurance and funds of CZK 156,500. Some trades need proof of qualification.
Business Visa as an s.r.o. Executive
Founders who set up a Czech s.r.o. and act as its executive (jednatel) also apply for a long-term visa for business. The legal minimum capital is CZK 1 per shareholder; the company needs a notarial deed and registration first.
Digital Nomad Programme
For highly qualified IT (and since 2025 marketing) professionals from the US and a few other countries who work remotely for foreign clients or employers, with income of at least 1.5 times the Czech average gross wage.
Costs & Tax
Business & Living Costs in Czechia
Setup costs
A trade licence costs a one-off CZK 1,000 — there is no annual fee. An s.r.o. registered directly by a notary with a simple memorandum and cash contributions pays no court fee; the notary's own fee is about CZK 2,000–4,000 plus VAT (estimate). The business visa fee is CZK 5,000.
Tax and insurance
Personal income tax is 15%, and 23% on income above CZK 1,762,812 a year (2026). Self-employed people also pay social and health insurance — at least CZK 3,306 a month for health and CZK 5,005 for social (from July 2026). Many freelancers instead choose the flat-tax scheme (paušální daň): one monthly payment covering tax, social and health insurance, CZK 9,162 in band 1 from July 2026. Freelancers without permanent residence usually still need private health insurance for their residence permit.
Corporate tax for an s.r.o. is 21% (19% before 2024). VAT registration is required once turnover exceeds CZK 2,000,000 in a calendar year, and immediately above CZK 2,536,500.

Brno
The second city — IT, biotech, gaming and advanced manufacturing, with major universities and research centres. Kiwi.com is headquartered here. Cheaper than Prague.
Ostrava
A former industrial city moving into automation, robotics and clean tech, with lower costs and a technical university.
Plzeň & České Budějovice
Regional centres with engineering and software firms, lower costs and a good quality of life.
Step by Step
Essential Steps for American Entrepreneurs
Get your trade licence confirmation
Choose the trade categories for your activity (most are "free trades"). The Trade Licensing Office issues a confirmation that you use for the visa application; the licence is entered within 5 working days of a complete application.
Prepare the visa file — start 3–4 months early
Gather an apostilled FBI background check, proof of funds (CZK 156,500), proof of accommodation, travel health insurance and the trade licence confirmation.
Apply at a Czech embassy or consulate
File in person; the decision takes up to 90 days (120 in complex cases). Precision matters — missing or incorrect documents cause delays.
Register on arrival
Report your address to the Foreign Police within 3 working days. Register with the tax office and social security (ČSSZ), and arrange health insurance.
Open a Czech bank account
Useful for receiving payments and for showing income when you extend your stay.
Hire a local accountant
An accountant (účetní) handles income tax, VAT and insurance filings. Tax returns are due 1 April on paper, 1 May electronically, or 1 July with a tax adviser.
Extend in Czechia
Before your visa expires, apply at the Ministry of the Interior for a long-term residence permit for business — up to 2 years at a time.
