Estonia launched its dedicated Digital Nomad Visa (Type D long-stay) in 2020, making it one of the first countries in the EU to create a formal legal pathway for location-independent professionals. US citizens can live in Estonia for up to 365 days while continuing to work remotely for a US employer, their own business, or international freelance clients.

Who Qualifies
Estonia’s Digital Nomad Visa covers three types of remote workers. All must demonstrate the ability to work independently of location using telecommunications technology, and meet the income threshold for the six months prior to applying.
Route 1
Remote Employee
Employment contract · Company registered outside Estonia · Location-independent
You hold an active employment contract with a company registered outside Estonia. Your role must be demonstrably location-independent — you perform your work using telecommunications technology and do not need to be physically present at a specific workplace.
Routes 2 & 3
Self-Employed or Freelancer
Company registered abroad · Clients outside Estonia · Remote-capable work
You run your own company registered outside Estonia, or you work as a freelancer with clients predominantly based outside Estonia. In both cases, your work must be location-independent and you must meet the €4,500/month income threshold for the 6 months prior to applying.
The €4,500 Income Threshold
Your gross monthly income must have met the minimum threshold consistently during the six months prior to applying. The current threshold is €4,500 per month gross. For a US remote worker or freelancer, this equates to roughly $58,000+ per year — a level comfortably met by most full-time US remote employees and established freelancers.
What counts as income
Gross salary from your employer, or gross business or freelance income. The requirement is measured on gross (pre-tax) income, not net. The income must come from remote work — dividends, rental income, or passive investment returns are generally not accepted as qualifying income.
How to document it
Employees: provide payslips for the last 6 months and a letter from your employer confirming remote work capability and salary level. Self-employed or freelancers: bank statements, contracts, and tax records showing 6 months of qualifying income. Documents not in Estonian or English may require certified translation.
Short stays under 90 days
US citizens do not need a Digital Nomad Visa for stays of 90 days or fewer within a 180-day period. You can work remotely in Estonia visa-free under standard Schengen rules. The Type D visa is only required if you intend to stay beyond this 90-day window.

You are not required to work for an Estonian employer, register a company in Estonia, or change your existing employment or business structure in any way. Your US income stream stays completely intact.

What This Visa Does Not Allow
No local employment in Estonia
You cannot work for an Estonian employer or take up local employment. Your work must be for clients or employers based outside Estonia. Providing services directly to Estonian clients as a freelancer is generally not permitted under this visa.
Temporary visa — not a residence permit
The Estonia Digital Nomad Visa is a Type D temporary stay visa, not a formal residence permit. It does not lead directly to permanent residency or Estonian citizenship. If your goal is longer-term residence in Estonia, you would need to transition to a work-based residence permit or the Estonia Startup Visa.

Application Process — Step by Step
You can apply through three channels: an Estonian Embassy or Consulate in the US (Washington D.C., New York, San Francisco), Visa Facilitation Services Global (authorised for US, Canada, and other countries), or in Estonia at the Police and Border Guard Board if already legally in the country.

Confirm you meet the income threshold
