Navigating Estonia Visas & Residency

US citizens can enter Estonia — and the entire Schengen Area — visa-free for 90 days. To stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit. Estonia offers one of the most accessible Digital Nomad Visas in the EU, launched in 2020.

Estonia's pioneering DNV for Americans working remotely for non-Estonian employers/clients. Launched August 2020. Available as C-visa (90 days) or D-visa (up to 365 days). Does NOT lead to permanent residency.
Business
e-Residency + Business
e-Residency is a digital identity (not a visa) allowing Americans to establish and run an EU-based OÜ company online. For physical residency based on running an Estonian business, a separate permit is required.

Temporary Residence for Employment
For Americans with a job offer from an Estonian-registered employer. New 2026 rule: employer must have actual economic activity in Estonia for at least 6 consecutive months before submitting the application.

New 2026 requirement: must complete adaptation program AND have A2 level Estonian language (exam required). Exemptions exist for applications submitted before January 1, 2026.

Tallinn costs are comparable to a mid-sized US city but with EU infrastructure and safety. A comfortable single-person lifestyle runs €1,200–1,800/month. Groceries, utilities, and public services are very reasonable. Consumer prices rose 3.7% year-over-year in January 2026.

Day-to-day expenses

Dining out costs €10–15 for a mid-range meal. Public transport in Tallinn is extremely affordable (€20–30/month) — Tallinn residents even ride for free. Rent is the primary expense at €700–1,000/month for a 1-bedroom in Tallinn center.

Healthcare

Residents access the mandatory Estonian health insurance system after registering (via employment or contributions). Quality is high. Private health insurance is affordable at €30–60/month — required for Digital Nomad Visa and initial residence permits.
