What Is It

Latvia’s Digital Nomad Visa — Overview

Latvia offers a one-year long-stay visa commonly referred to as the Digital Nomad Visa. It is a residence permit that allows you to live in Latvia while working remotely for a US employer or operating your own US-registered business. It is Schengen-area residence, which means free travel across most of Europe.

For US remote workers and freelancers, Latvia’s digital nomad route offers a clear, well-defined pathway — with documented income requirements, a straightforward application process, and one of Europe’s lower cost-of-living bases. Riga, the capital, has a growing remote-worker community, widespread English use, and excellent infrastructure.

“Latvia gives you EU residence, Schengen travel, and a base in one of Europe’s most underrated capitals — while you keep your US income and your US business.”

Eligibility

Who Qualifies

There are two routes to the Latvia Digital Nomad Visa. Both require proof of stable remote income above the minimum threshold.

Route 1
Remote Employee
US employer · OECD-based company · 6+ months employment
You work for a company based in an OECD country — a US employer qualifies. You must have been employed by the same employer for at least 6 months before applying, with documented remote work capability and monthly income at or above €4,213 gross.
Route 2
Self-Employed / Business Owner
US-registered business · 6+ months trading · Documented income
You own and operate a business registered in the US or another OECD country. You must demonstrate at least 6 months of business income at or above the €4,213 monthly threshold, evidenced through tax authority documents or equivalent financial records.
Income Requirement

The €4,213 Income Threshold

Your monthly income must be at least €4,213 gross. This figure equals 2.5× the Latvian average gross salary and is recalculated annually, so verify the current amount before applying. For a US remote worker or freelancer earning above roughly $55,000 per year, this threshold is typically straightforward to meet.

What counts as income
Gross salary from your US employer, or gross business income if self-employed. The requirement is on gross (pre-tax) income, not net. Dividends, rental income, or investment returns are generally not accepted as qualifying income for this visa type.
How to document it
Employees: provide your last 3–6 months of payslips, a letter from your employer confirming remote work and salary, and tax/social insurance records. Self-employed: tax authority documents showing at least 6 months of income at the required level. All documents may require official translation into Latvian.
Annual recalculation
Latvia recalculates the threshold each year. The €4,213 figure is current at the time of publishing. Always verify the exact figure with the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) or through your immigration advisor before submitting your application.
Benefits

What You Get

One-year Latvian residence permit
A legal right to live in Latvia for one year. Renewable annually if you continue to meet the income and employment conditions. The permit is a physical card issued by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP).
Schengen Area freedom of movement
As a Latvia resident, you can travel freely within the 29-country Schengen Area without a separate visa or travel permit. This includes Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and most of Central and Northern Europe.
Keep your US job or business
You are not required to work for a Latvian employer, register a Latvian company, or change your existing employment or business structure. Your US income stream stays intact.
Access to Riga’s growing nomad infrastructure
Riga offers coworking spaces, high-speed internet, English-speaking professionals and services, a lively expat and nomad community, and a cost of living significantly lower than Western Europe.
Important Limitations

What This Visa Does Not Allow

No local employment in Latvia
You cannot work for a Latvian employer, take up local employment, or provide services directly to Latvian clients as a freelancer. The visa is specifically for remote work for non-Latvian employers or businesses.
Does not lead directly to permanent residency
The Digital Nomad Visa does not create a direct path to permanent residency or citizenship. If your goal is long-term residency in Latvia, you would need to transition to a different permit — such as the Golden Visa investor residency or a work permit — to build toward permanent status.

How to Apply

Application Process — Step by Step

1
Confirm you meet the income threshold
Verify the current €4,213 threshold and ensure you have at least 6 months of documented income or employment at that level. Gather your payslips, employer letters, or tax documents.
2
Arrange accommodation in Latvia
Secure a rental agreement or confirmed accommodation in Latvia before applying. Short-term rentals and furnished apartments are widely available in Riga for this purpose — check LocalVouch for landlords and letting agents other expats have personally recommended.
3
Get qualifying health insurance
Purchase a health insurance policy valid in Latvia and the Schengen Area with at least €42,600 coverage. Several international insurers offer nomad-specific policies that meet this requirement.
4
Compile and translate your documents
Gather all required documents. Documents not in Latvian or English may need certified translation. Your immigration advisor can confirm which documents need translation for your specific situation.
5
Submit your application to PMLP
Submit your application to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) in Latvia, either in person or through an authorised representative. Pay the state fee at the time of submission.
6
Receive your residence permit
Upon approval, you will receive your Latvian residence permit card. You can then enter Latvia, register your address, and begin your stay as a legal EU resident.
Why Choose Latvia

Why US Remote Workers Consider Latvia

Straightforward application with clear income documentation
Latvia’s requirements are clearly defined — there is no subjective business plan review, no interview, and no ambiguity about the income threshold. If you meet the conditions and have the documents, the process is predictable.
Lower cost of living than most Western European nomad visa destinations
Riga’s cost of living is significantly below Lisbon, Barcelona, Amsterdam, or Berlin — all popular digital nomad destinations. A comfortable lifestyle in Riga typically costs 35–45% less than in Western Europe.
Riga is a growing hub for remote workers
The Latvian capital has invested in coworking infrastructure, fast broadband, and English-language services. A growing international community of remote workers and entrepreneurs calls Riga home, making integration relatively straightforward for American nomads.
Schengen access without a separate travel visa
Your Latvia residence permit gives you the right to travel freely across the Schengen Area without applying for separate visas. For US citizens who want to explore multiple European countries while basing in one place, this is a significant practical advantage.
Bottom Line — Is the Latvia Digital Nomad Visa Right for You?
  • You work remotely for a US employer or run your own US business
  • Your gross monthly income is at or above €4,213
  • You want EU residence with Schengen travel rights
  • You want a lower cost base than Western Europe
  • You are not looking for a direct path to permanent residency (for that, consider the Latvia Golden Visa)
