Europe doesn’t ask you to choose between quality of life and affordability — it simply offers both, in different proportions depending on where you look. The Baltic states match the Mediterranean on digital infrastructure; the Mediterranean beats the Nordics on climate. The right country is not the best country objectively. It is the best country for you.

US citizens are taxed on worldwide income — get cross-border tax advice before you move
The US taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live. Moving to Europe does not end your US tax obligations. Becoming a European tax resident creates dual taxation exposure that requires expert management. Most US-EU tax treaties mitigate double taxation but do not eliminate FBAR, FATCA, or Form 8938 reporting obligations. Consult a cross-border tax advisor with specific US expat expertise before choosing your country — the tax treatment of your income (pension, dividends, remote work, rental income) should be a primary input to your country selection, not an afterthought.
Dual citizenship varies country by country — know the position before planning naturalisation
Germany (since June 2024), Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Malta, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Cyprus all explicitly allow dual citizenship. Spain and Austria generally do not. The Netherlands and most Baltic states generally do not allow dual for naturalising Americans. If keeping your US passport is important, verify each country’s dual citizenship position before building your long-term settlement plan. For Germany and Portugal — the two most popular destinations — dual citizenship is explicitly confirmed.
Immigration thresholds change — always verify current requirements before applying
Key 2026 changes: Portugal’s naturalisation residency requirement doubled from 5 to 10 years (7 for EU/CPLP nationals) under Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026, in force from 19 May 2026. Germany’s dual citizenship law took effect June 2024. Spain’s Golden Visa closed April 2025. Portugal’s NHR programme ended — new IFICI+ is profession-based. Estonia introduced a 2% security tax from January 2026 (effective resident rate now 24%). Denmark’s work permit salary threshold increased to approximately €5,000/month. Always confirm current requirements with official government sources or a licensed immigration attorney at the time of application.
