Prepare documents 3–4 months early

Apply at French Consulate in the US

Submit your long-stay visa application at the French Consulate or Embassy before you leave. All long-stay visas must be obtained from outside France — you cannot switch status as a tourist.

Validate visa on arrival (OFII)

Within 3 months of arriving, validate your long-stay visa online with OFII (Office Français de l'Immigration et de l'Intégration). This is mandatory and unlocks your right to reside.
